Highlights From The Orville Panel at NYCC 2019

The Orville NYCC Panel 2019

The Orville NYCC Panel 2019

Last year I was unable to make The Orville panel at New York Comic Con, but I wasn’t about to make the same mistake twice. Despite attending a friend’s wedding the evening before, I still dragged myself out of bed to ensure my spot in the main stage queue line. While running on just four hours of sleep was not an optimal amount of rest for a second full day at NYCC, it was still totally worth it. Especially for gems like this one:

What is the essence of two Moclans making love? It’s like two rocks in a dryer.”

As evidenced by the quote above, The Orville panel was a complete hoot. Insights into the upcoming third season were scarce, but it was still full of laughs and memorable moments. This cast is extremely funny and charming, on screen and off.

Here’s the highlights:

  • Speaking of season three, Executive Producer and Director Jon Cassar, did promise space battles, parties, and more parties.
  • Last season’s two parter “Identity: Part I” (2×8) and “Identity: Part II” (2×9) is heavily influencing season 3 in terms of epicness.
  • Speaking of the Kaylons, because Isaac was their only “representative” on the show for so long, actor Mark Jackson essentially had to teach a class on “Kaylon” to all the fellow actors and extras so that they could mimic his mannerisms.
  • Asked what it was like playing against herself, Adrianne Palicki said that fun Kelly had a higher voice, bangs, little hints, etc. It also helped that she got the script early.
  • How do you have love scenes with a robot suit? Mark Jackson and Penny Johnson Jerald rehearsed it. However, she said the trick to selling it is finding the thing about the other person that makes them hot. In this case, it was Mark’s lips. She described the rest of him as adorable. They also shared that both thought there was going to be nudity so they worked hard to be camera ready, and then once they realized nothing was going to be shown they pigged out at craft services.
  • Jessica Szohr joined the cast in the second season as the new “muscle,” she said coming in and fitting in was easy.
  • Scott Grimes serenaded Mark Jackson as Isaac, that sentence doesn’t do it justice. Just watch the panel, the Orville Nation YouTube channel has the highlights.
  • The cast was asked about their favorite episodes, their answers included: “Krill” 1×6, “Lasting Impressions” 2×11,”Primal Urges” 2×2, and “Into the Fold” 1×8.
  • Peter Macon danced as Bortis for us, once again I urge you to watch the video linked above.
  • The creative team mentioned that it’s been hard to find new actors to play Moclans because of what Peter Macon and Chad Coleman have done to bring them to life under all that makeup. and the nuance
  • While Seth MacFarlane was unable to attend NYCC, a common theme was how much he was involved in every part of this show and how much love and care goes into it. Speaking of which, no one was surprised at all that Seth could do drama so well, everyone agreed that he’s very intelligent and surrounds himself with great people too.
  • With the move to Hulu, episodes will be on average 10 mins longer, so we have that to look forward to!
  • No premiere date yet, but new episodes will rollout weekly on Hulu.

Season three of The Orville will be released exclusively on Hulu in 2020.
