Highlights From The Marvel Runaways Panel at NYCC 2018

Marvel Runaways NYCC 2018 panel

Marvel Runaways NYCC 2018 panel

I had a tough call to make on Friday at New York Comic Con, go to this panel or the Boy Meets World 25th Anniversary Reunion. Based on the title alone, you probably know which one I picked. Still, I hesitated. Nostalgia vs something new. New won out because that Boy Meets World panel is probably already uploaded to YouTube and well Marvel keeps everything under lock and key.

No regrets though, the Runaways panel was a lot of fun. We were treated to the second season trailer, entire first episode of season two, and a Q&A with the runaways and co-Creator Stephanie Savage moderated by the always entertaining Jeph Loeb, Head of Marvel Television.

Bonus reason I enjoyed this panel: I got to hang with Matt and Pete from Phantastic Geek -the “official unofficial voice of the Marvel Cinematic Community and Star Trek: Discovery“. As such, I strongly encourage you to give their family of podcasts a listen for even more Marvel, NYCC, and Runaways goodness. They currently cover over 10 shows plus the Marvel movies so there’s quality geeky analysis and insight for everyone!

And if you’re like, I just want to know about the Runaways panel at New York Comic Con cut to the chase, you can continue reading and / or check out the Phantastic Geek “Runaways: Previewing Season 2 at NYCC 2018” podcast.

Anyhoo, I obviously can’t spoil anything about Runaways, wouldn’t want S.H.I.E.L.D. coming after me, but here’s the season two trailer plus some highlights from the 2018 panel:

  • When asked what’s different about this season, co-creator Stephanie Savage candidly replied that they’ve run away.
  • Jeph Loeb went down the line asking the actors what was going on with their characters this coming season, here’s what we learned:
    • Nico – Becomes the reluctant leader and is all about whipping the group into shape with training.
    • Molly – She’s street smart and really embracing her powers.
    • Karolina – Is likewise becoming more in tune with her powers and is now sharing a room with Nico, so that relationship is blossoming.
    • Chase – Is learning what it means to become a man and his relationship with Gert is still something that’s being explored.
    • Gert – For being a social justice warrior, this is the first time she’s witnessing social injustice in person and she’s having a hard time dealing with everything without her meds.
  • The first episode picks up pretty much where the first season ended, there is not a time jump.
  • Over the course of the second season, the kids will be doing a lot of growing up and will learn how to better harness their powers.
  • There is a mole among the group of runaways.
  • An audience member asked if it was difficult to act opposite Old Lace. At first they all joked that they had a real dinosaur, but in reality they use an animatronic robot, so no it’s not difficult.
  • Avengers 4 will not impact the show.
  • Asked whether or not there would be more runaways or a crossover with Cloak & Dagger, Jeph Loeb essentially pleaded the fifth and said that December 21st couldn’t come soon enough.
  • Speaking of December 21st, the entire 2nd season will drop all at once this year on Hulu. No more waiting week-to-week. Enjoy binge watching over the holidays.

The entire second season of Runaways will be available on Hulu on December 21st.
