Over the last two weeks a whole bunch of Emmy awards were handed out and while I didn’t manage to catch any of the telecasts I certainly took a good long look at the list of nominees and winners. Here’s some highlights from not just the big races, but also the more obscure categories.
Outstanding Television Movie
Black Mirror took home its second prize in this category. Last year it won for “San Junipero”, this year it won for “USS Callister”.
Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special
John Mulaney was the winner of this category for his stand-up special Kid Gorgeous, which is available to stream on Netflix. I seriously recommend checking this one out if you haven’t already, it’s hilarious. The bit about Detective J.J. Bittenbinder is particularly great.
Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series
Amy Sherman-Palladino won not one Emmy, but two this year! She also won for Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series. Sidenote: Can you believe that she was never even nominated for Gilmore Girls?!? Anyhow, the two wins were for the pilot episode of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which you can find on Amazon. Season two is coming soon.
Outstanding Narrator
Did you know they gave out Emmys for narration? They do, and this year Sir David Attenborough won for Blue Planet II. This was his fourth nomination and first win. If you’d like to be serenaded by his soothing voice, check out the BBC series, which also features the music of Hans Zimmer and Radiohead.
Outstanding Main Title Design
This is my favorite of all the Emmy categories because only new shows are eligible, which means a new crop of nominees every year. The 2018 title design winner was the Starz series Counterpart. The opening was created by the company Imaginary Forces; check out their YouTube channel to see even more of their nifty creations.
Outstanding Stunt Coordination for a Comedy Series or Variety Program
Shauna Duggins became the first woman to win in this category for her work on Netflix’s GLOW! Which is an excellent show by the way, one that you should be watching. The 80s style wrestling is legit. She was previously nominated for her work on Alias.
Outstanding Variety Special (Live)
As an Executive Producer on Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert, John Legend won an Emmy and earned EGOT status! In doing so, he became the youngest person to do so and also the first black man to receive all four awards.
