Baking Scones Because of Apple TV+’s Dickinson

Emily Dickinson Scones

Apple TV+’s Dickinson is a really fun TV show. It’s well cast, the scenery and costumes are on point, and the use of present-day music and dialog is amusing. The way the series manages to bring the poetry of Emily Dickinson to life is also impressive. But there’s plenty of other people praising those points. What I’m here for, is the baked goods.

You see, Emily’s mom is obsessed with being the perfect housewife / hostess, so almost every episode features a full table of delectable pastries, most notably scones.

And while Emily initially rails against doing any kind of housework, including cooking, we do eventually learn that she has a knack for it, when it’s on her own terms.

Emily: I’ll take care of the whole meal.

Lavinia: But you hate to cook.

Austin: You refuse to do any chores.

Lavinia: You once told me you were allergic to the fabric of aprons.

Emily: Actually, it’s not that I hate cooking, it’s that I don’t typically prioritize it. When I do make time to be in the kitchen I find that I really enjoy it.

Emily Dickinson and Sue Cooking

So inspired by both my love for scones and Dickinson, I decided to put some of those pandemic-purchased baking ingredients to good use and try my hand at making some myself.

Here’s how:

Step 1: Find a recipe.

I don’t have the baking skills to just whip something up, so I used The BEST Scone Recipe from Live Well Bake Often. (I Googled “easy scone recipe” and it was one of the top results.)

Step 2: Follow the recipe.

While the recipe linked above does have additional instructions for several scone variations, I just made the plain ol’ simple ones with the vanilla glaze. I didn’t want to get too fancy on my first try.

Final result: Success!

Homemade Scones

Can confirm, these scones are both easy to make and quite tasty!

So the next time you’re hosting a Victorian-inspired tea party, or a regular brunch, why not make some scones? I highly recommend the recipe above.

And if you’re looking for something new to watch, I also recommend Apple TV+’s Dickinson.

If you’ve got feelings on either the show, or scones in general, feel free to leave a comment below.
