Superheroes, they’re just like us. Except not really. Sure, they struggle with relationships and mortality, but their day-to-day lives involve more capes, cool abilities, punching, secret government organizations, and aliens/mutants/powered beings than us mere mortals. Plus they’re under an insane amount of pressure, having to prevent the end of the world and what not on a weekly basis.
Supergirl is no different from the other superheroes in that way. From aliens to megalomaniac corporate villain types, she always has her hands full in National City. However, unlike most superheroes on TV she’s still really relatable. Here’s three reasons why:
1. She eats.
Look, I get it, most nights I struggle to eat dinner at a reasonable hour and I’m not even busy preventing an alien invasion, but still, meal time is important. And I love Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., but those poor people have ate like twice in the last five years, which is such a bummer for them. But food and eating is such a normal and essential part of everyday life so it’s refreshing to see Kara not only eat meals on a regular basis, but also really love food. Doesn’t hurt that she can’t get fat, at least not on earth, but from donuts and wings to ice cream and potstickers, Kara and her friends take time to refuel and break bread together. Alcohol also makes frequent appearances, because hey, they’re all adults.
2. She wears comfy clothes at home.
The speed at which Kara changes into her Supergirl getup is how quickly I trade my jeans for a pair of sweatpants when I get home from work each day. I mean, who doesn’t love to come home and immediately get cozy? Fuzzy socks, sweatpants, leggings, hoodies – Kara and Alex have the post-work-day attire down pat. It’s nice to see a superhero, or even just some TV characters for that matter dress for comfort every now and then.
3. She hangs out.
It can’t be all work and no play, or at least I believe Supergirl is at its best when the show strikes the right balance between action / adventure and hangout comedy. Game night, karaoke, going to the bar, lunch dates, holiday get-togethers, binge watching TV, sister nights – these are the scenes that make me care about these characters. Kicking ass is cool and saving the world is also great, but just hanging out with the people you love, that’s where the show gets me.
Alex once said, “Kara Danvers is my favorite person,” and I have to agree. Ironically, she’s what keeps this comic book-based show down-to-earth.
