You better acca-believe it. Season four of The Sing-Off premieres this Monday, December 9th at 8pm – just in time to fill the TV doldrums during the holiday season.
Despite being presumably cancelled back in 2012, The Sing-Off lives to see another season. Maybe NBC decided to finally just say ‘screw it’ and air singing competitions year round, or maybe they’re just late to the post Pitch Perfect a cappella appreciation, or maybe they’re just trying to fill the schedule with anything they can think of until the Winter Olympics begin in February, either way this is an NBC decision that I applaud.
The Chairs May Not Swivel But Don’t Discount The Sing-Off
I only caught the third season of The Sing-Off, back in 2011 but it was a good one, Pentatonix took home the trophy that year. Besides the impressive talent on display, the series doesn’t waste time with weeks of auditions or hours of results show. And there’s no contestant drama either, it’s just ten a cappella groups vying for the grand prize of a recording contract and $100,000. And with only a seven episode 4th season, this installment promises to be just as filler-free.
Nick Lachey will resume his hosting duties and despite the year-plus hiatus, two-thirds of the judging table will be back: Ben Folds of Ben Folds Five and Shawn Stockman from Boyz II Men. Singer songwriter Jewel will be joining them. (Sara Bareilles was the third judge in seasons 1-3.)
Bottom line, The Sing-Off is a TV series that focuses on the talent and competition and requires very little time commitment, what more could you want from a reality show?
Can’t wait till Monday, here’s some highlights from season 3:
