Anyone who follows my New York Comic Con coverage knows that I always love to look for the “diamonds in the rough”. AKA the smaller entertainment panels that are hidden in the depths of the Javits Center. The ones that will never make headlines or pop up on YouTube. The panels that you just have to be there in person to see. Of course this year, with all of NYCC on YouTube, that made this endeavor a bit trickier, but lo and behold, I think I’ve found the perfect panel for 2020.
Take those bread making skills you honed back in the Spring, and take a stab at making some geeky food for whatever TV or movies you love with this panel:

Not only do I love the bit of wisdom Chris-Rachael Oseland shares at the top of the panel regarding origin stories, but I also really appreciate the way she’s so encouraging. (We could all use a little positivity right now.) Rather than throw up a barrier and be like you’ve got to be an experienced cook or baker to give it a go, Oseland provides real tips to get started by stressing the importance of simplification by focusing on recognizable shapes and lines.
However, if you need more guidance to get started, visit her website: https://kitchenoverlord.com/ for recipes, photos, and links to buy her cookbooks which cater to fans of Doctor Who, The Lord of the Rings, and more.
Personally I think I need to try my hand at making some of these geek breads or The Walking Dead-inspired red velvet cinnamon roll guts, which look particularly fitting for the Halloween season. That Flash-inspired pie she mentioned also looks super delicious, pun intended.
I know I’m not the only one going a bit stir crazy so many months into this pandemic, so why not fire up that KitchenAid mixer again and make something you’d love to eat, inspired by something you love to watch.
For even more NYCC Metaverse TV panel recommendations and highlights, give the Phantastic Geek podcast a listen. In lieu of our annual meet-up, Matt and Pete so kindly invited me to join them on their podcast to talk about this year’s offerings, what we miss from the in-person experience, what NYCC might look like in the future, and much much more!
