Every new TV season brings changes to the TV guide as shows shift time slots, move nights, and even change networks. Here’s a handful of the most notable moves for the upcoming 2016-2017 TV season.
Changing of the Seasons
AMC’s Halt and Catch Fire not only moves to a new night but also to an almost “fall-ish” debut date, premiering on Tuesday August 23rd at 9pm.
You’ll also get more Masters of Sex and Shameless before the new year, as Showtime announced their fall premiere dates for Sunday September 11th and October 2nd respectively.
Conversely, it’s going to be a long wait for the 7th season of Game of Thrones, which won’t return until the summer of 2017.
New Night and / or New Time
NBC’s Blindspot will return for a sophomore season on September 14th on a new night and new time – moving from Mondays at 10pm to Wednesdays at 8pm. Given the show’s penchant for action and violence I’m surprised by the move to 8pm, as that’s technically outside of the “safe harbor” hours.
On the other hand, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. will air an hour later as it’s taking over the 10pm timeslot on Tuesday nights, a perpetual problem area for ABC. The cast and creators have both said that the new later time will allow the show to be darker. It’s third season will kick off on Tuesday September 20th.
And Supernatural is on the move again. The never-say-die CW series will debut on Thursday October 13th and air in the 9pm timeslot.
New Home
Supergirl will join her DC brethren on The CW beginning Monday October 10th at 8pm. The change in location comes after CBS decided that the series would be a better fit for the younger-skewing network, which they co-own.
After 22 cycles, America’s Next Top Model is saying farewell to The CW and Tyra Banks. Starting this fall, the long-running reality competition series will air on VH1 and Rita Ora will take over hosting duties for its upcoming 23rd cycle.
Nashville’s gamble on a cliffhanger ending paid off as CMT swooped in last minute to offer the wayward drama a new home for its upcoming fifth season, which will debut on Thursday January 5th at 9pm.
Mid-Season
Scandal’s sixth season is being held to the mid-season to accommodate Kerry Washington’s real-life pregnancy. In the meantime you’ll have to make do with just two-thirds of your ABC Thursday nights coming courtesy of Shonda Rhimes.
Bones’ final season will likewise premier in the winter. An exact date has yet to be determined, but don’t worry you will get a chance to say goodbye.
