HoneyHoney is the Featured Band on The Guest Book

The Guest Book on TBS

I found TBS’s new show The Guest Book in a roundabout way, but after one episode I was hooked. It features a strong main cast, a sustainable anthology-ish premise, fast paced jokes, and great guest stars. And oh yeah, a really cool “house band” that plays the opening theme song, plus a live song at the end of every episode.

That band is HoneyHoney, a duo from Los Angeles. Spotify describes their music styling as a “jazzy, twangy, rollicking collaboration between vocalist Suzanne Santo and guitarist Ben Jaffe”. To date, they’ve released three full-length albums, but on The Guest Book they play a combination of original songs and covers.

HoneyHoney on The Guest Book

Funny enough, The Guest Book isn’t their first foray into television. Suzanne Santo actually did some acting in the early 2000s making guest appearances on shows like Law & Order, Without a Trace, and Judging Amy. Another interesting TV-related tidbit about HoneyHoney – Kiefer Sutherland was an early fan of the band and signed them to his label Ironworks Music in 2007. (That label is now defunct.)

So how exactly did they make their way to a TBS comedy? They were actually a creative solution to budget constraints. In an interview with Paste, the show’s creator Greg Garcia explains that he got the idea while out enjoying live music one night. His music supervisor liked the concept of having a band play live music in the show so he found a few bands that could work, one of them was HoneyHoney. They obviously won the part. Apparently they recorded two tracks for every episode, one original song and a cover. The song that best fit the episode was the one to make it to air.

HoneyHoney The Guest Book

The first season of The Guest Book concludes on Thursday September 28th at 10:30pm (the show’s already been renewed for season two), so your best bet for catching HoneyHoney in action is to check the show out on demand or on TBS.com. And if you’re just interested in hearing more of their tunes, well there’s always Spotify.

There’s also an official The Guest Book album: Season 1 Live at Chubby’s.

Hi.. I’m watching the guest book season 2 episode 8 and in the song by honey honey and they mention my home town and state of Westerly, RI…. even mentioning the local beach and Yacht club… I’d love to know their connection as we are not very famous down here in the smallest state of the union

It appears that the song they perform in the 8th episode is one of the covers. The song is called “Nanny” and its by Loudon Wainwright III. So I guess he’s the one with the connection to Westerly, RI. (BTW, I actually visited Rhode Island for the first time a few weeks ago and it was lovely!) Thanks for reading.

Liked the show right off, but when it ended here was this pretty young thing singing away. Something about their demeanor grabbed me immediately. I absolutely had to find out more about them. So here I’m researching them!
