Celebrate the awesome ladies in your life this Galentine’s Day, February 13th, with some added pizzazz courtesy of this cute DIY waffles and hearts garland banner.
Materials Needed:
- Several sheets of assorted colored felt
- Waffle template (see below)
- Permanent marker or pen
- Scissors
- Hot glue gun & hot glue
- Yarn or twine
How-To Make a Galentine’s Day Garland Banner
Prepare the Waffle Template
Download and print the PDF Waffle template. I recommend using card stock so it’ll stand up to repeat use.
Then cut it out. Fair warning, this part is tedious when done by hand with scissors. I don’t have any experience with a Cricut, but it feels like this is something it’d be well suited for. And if so, it would certainly make the process less painstaking.
Trace & Assemble the Waffles
Use a permanent marker, like a Sharpie, or pen to trace the waffle template onto a felt sheet. Then trace it a second time, but just the outer square perimeter of the waffle.
Each waffle will require two pieces of felt to give it a three-dimensional look.
One for the back, which is just the plain square, and a second for the front which is the one where you’ve cut out all of the nooks and crannies
Line them up on top of each other, and then using a hot glue gun, glue the two pieces together.
Repeat the above steps to make as many additional waffles as your heart desires. (My garland banner features a total of three waffles and six hearts.)
Make Some Felt Hearts Too
To fill the remaining gaps in the garland banner, use the other colored felt sheets to make hearts (or any other shape that strikes your fancy for Galentine’s Day). I just did some freehand drawing to come up with the designs for mine. Then I and mixed and matched the hearts based on what I had on hand color wise.
Drawing a blank? A quick Google search will give you plenty of ideas to design your own or provide you with a heart template to trace if need be.
Assemble the Garland Banner
Use an exacto / utility knife, hole punch, or a yarn needle (and some force) to make holes at the top of the hearts and waffles to thread the yarn or twine through.
To determine the proper length of the string, I spaced out the waffles and hearts how I wanted them and then rolled out the yarn and cut accordingly.
And ta da, you’re done! Now you’ve got yourself some reusable Galentine’s Day decor worthy of all the poetic noble land mermaids, beautiful tropical fishes, and opalescent tree sharks in your life.
