The weather in New Jersey has finally turned unpleasant enough that I no longer feel guilty spending my weekends watching football on the couch. And just like a day spent marathoning TV, having the right provisions are a must.
Now of course there’s the standard football fare like burgers, hot dogs, nachos, and buffalo chicken dip, but with a little more creativity you can really spice up the spread. Remember, presentation is everything.
For hotdogs and burgers, you could make pigs in a blanket or sliders. And regardless of the serving size you settle on, you could also set out a variety of toppings and sauces like ranch dressing, barbecue sauce, bacon strips, and even French’s fried onions.
But perhaps you aren’t quite ready for lunch food yet. Whether you woke up late or live on the West Coast, why not try pancakes in the shape of a football? Or you could make a breakfast sandwich with cheese made to look the part. And even if you forgo the sporty design, when are breakfast sandwiches ever a bad idea?
Now that you’ve got breakfast and lunch covered it might not be a bad idea to also eat something with nutrients in it. Fruit salads and fruit kabobs are an easy way to break up the carbo-loading. And if your team’s colors lend themselves to it, maybe the fruit could even be color coordinated. As an Eagles fan though I would mostly just be eating green grapes and green apples so there’s certainly limitations to that idea.
But enough with the healthy stuff, there are two other food groups that are essential to a day of sports – beer and dessert. And if you’re feeling super crafty you can combine them. There are some pretty clever recipes for Angry Orchard, Blue Moon and Corona infused cupcakes.
