At some point TBS quietly amassed a solid line-up of original programming. No longer just the home for reruns of Family Guy and The Big Bang Theory, TBS currently boasts a late night talk show, a weekly news satire program, an array of live action single cam comedies, and more.
Here’s some highlights from their current offerings:
Angie Tribeca
This show may be my favorite of the bunch. Called the “smartest dumb comedy on TV” by IndieWire, Angie Tribeca parodies cop procedurals with satire, witty wordplay, and slapstick comedy. In it’s third season, Angie Tribeca currently airs Monday nights at 10:30pm.
Conan
Conan has been on the air for seven years now, so if you aren’t familiar with it I’m not sure where you’ve been. Name alone should tip you off, it’s Conan O’Brien’s late night talk show. New episodes air Monday – Thursday at 11pm.
The Detour
To be honest I haven’t see this one, but the show was recently renewed for a third season so that’s a positive sign. Created by Jason Jones & Samantha Bee, The Detour follows the Parker family on their road trip from Upstate New York to Florida. Let’s just say, it’s not all smooth sailing.
Full Frontal with Samantha Bee
Speaking of Samantha Bee, Full Frontal is her weekly late-night news program. Tune in Wednesdays at 10:30pm to see her take on everything from the Trump administration and Russian Internet trolls to Indian tribal sovereignty and the vaping industry.
People of Earth
Haven’t seen this one either, but TBS describes it as an “original comedy about a support group for alien abductees”. Based on the promos for People of Earth, it looks like aliens actually do exist in the world of the show, so that adds an interesting twist to the comedy in that these people aren’t actually crazy, or at least in regards to that. The series has already been renewed for a second season.
Search Party
This comedy has likewise been renewed for a second season. Search Party’s first season earned rave reviews. I was more lukewarm about the series, but that was mostly because if I’m going to watch a show about twentysomethings in New York I’d rather it be Broad City. The acting was solid though and the story does deliver in regards to its central mystery.
Wrecked
Wrecked has a great ensemble and fun writing. The show is about a group of survivors stranded on an island after a plane crash but don’t worry, it never veers into Lost territory. Sure, they worry about food and struggle with leadership, but they also fret over what DVD to watch with the last of the portable DVD player’s battery power. The second season premiers June 20th.
